Information on the moisture content of different types of wood and building materials is not just something that’s nice to know. Excess moisture can have a variety of adverse effects on wood, plaster, screed and countless other soft building materials which can mark the beginning of a long, costly and extremely painstaking process.
Long, because if ignored excess moisture does not simply disappear – it inflates the work that has to be carried out. Any work performed on top of a layer of screed that has not dried out properly, for example, may have to be reversed, meaning that tiles which had previously been so painstakingly laid may have to be ripped out and replaced or restorative drying may have to be carried out.
Which brings us to the second point: costly. Such work is not only laborious, it is also very costly. Unnecessarily costly, because there is an easy and effective means of determining the moisture content which could prevent such mistakes.
And painstaking, because such preventable work does not only hurt your pocket, it also causes much grief and worry and can take a long time to remedy.
These would seem to be a fair number of reasons then for wanting to buy a BM20 semi-professional moisture meter. The BM 20 is a hand-held measuring device which has two steel pins to measure the exact amount of moisture in a variety of different woods and building materials. All you have to do is insert the pins in to the material you wish to test and read off the moisture value which is presented as a percentage on a bar scale.
The BM 20 has two bar scales (for added accuracy) - one for wood and one for building materials. Switching from one bar scale to another is easy as measuring itself. Just flick the sliding switch and obtain a moisture reading for numerous different types of wood which is even more exact than you would have thought possible thanks to an integrated calibration curve which contains the average moisture amounts of all the most important types of wood across Europe based on a wood temperature of 20 °C.
The BM20 is also equipped with a reference adapter in the protection cap which allows you to check both the battery status and whether the moisture meter is working properly.
So the choice is yours really. You can either risk not knowing how high the moisture content in the building material or the wood you wish to work with is or you can use the BM20 moisture meter in the Trotec MultiMeasure Basic series to determine the exact amount and save yourself not only money but also more trouble than you had possibly bargained for.
